About the project

The Heights Line is a proposed 1.75-mile linear green space and trail on National Street, a four-lane road running through the Heights neighborhood of Memphis, Tennessee. The Heights Line will connect a neighborhood with a history of underinvestment to other existing and proposed trails and public spaces. The project will, in effect, create the first north-south connector trail, allowing all Memphians to have access to dozens of miles of uninterrupted trails when completed, whereas now existing greenways and greenlines are unconnected pockets throughout a sprawling city. More importantly, this project has the possibility to connect neighbors by creating the only improved green space in the neighborhood. To this end, this project is locally initiated and managed by the Heights CDC. We worked directly with the CDC and Alta Planning and Design to help get the voice of residents into final design decisions through non-traditional approaches to public engagement.
